RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Sunday Special; Feature on Portage Place turning 30. Photo of Yassir Ali with her husband Omra Elabid and their son Hassan Ali (11/2yrs) who live near Portage Place and frequent the mall. They say they like the mall even though the area behind Portage Place has been known for drug trafficking. But new immigrants that live in the area have brought diversity and new life to the area which some say has helped make the area safer. When the mall opened in 1987, it was to great fanfare and hopes it would "be the first step toward (downtown) revitalization and that, with a strong commercial core and residential development, other facilities would soon follow," Now, 30 years later operating with many shuttered storefronts and having dealt with big-name closures (McNally, Holt Renfrew, IMAX),complaints of drug deals happening on the premises and increased retail competition, can Portage Place bounce back? Does it have plans to? See Jessica Botelho-Urbanski story. SEPT 13, 2017
