Winnipeg Free Press Archives October 9, 1983 Placard-carrying marchers walk down Memorial Boulevard toward legislature for ceremony. About 6,000 Ukrainian-Canadians gathered around a black-cloaked coffin outside the legislative building Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of the famine. The commemorative service, organized by the Ukrainian National Committee, was to bring public attention to what organizers called "the 20th century's least-known atrocity." Millions of Ukrainians died of starvation in 1932-33 when food supplies were cut off by the Soviet regime, said Harry Dmytryshyn, chairman of the organizing committee.
