Kamar Ali looks over a family photo album Wednesday. She did not want to show a portrait of her mother for fear of putting her at risk in Saudi Arabia. Kamar’s Ethiopian mom is one of the “slave” labourers working in Saudi Arabia – things have gotten very bad for Ethiopians working in the oil-rich country as employers abuse their foreign workers who have few if any rights and no protection from their own government. She last saw her mother in 2012 when Kamar when to Ethiopia to get married and her mom returned there for the wedding – she was gaunt, sick and depressed. SANDERS STORY RUNNING THURSDAY (?) BTW - Kamar’s not alone- about 300 Wpg Ethiopan and Eritrean families are believed to have family working in Saudi Arabia – protests are planned all over North America including one here Sunday.
