The 19th annual Manitoba Aboriginal Youth Achievement Awards (MAYAA) at Polo Park Canad Inns at 1405 St. Matthews Street. Awards were presented to 16 outstanding Aboriginal youth between the ages of 16 and 24. MAYAA winners have achieved standards of excellence in academics, arts, athletics, business/entrepreneurship, community involvement, culture, employment in a traditional field, health, and personal achievement.The MAYAA began in 1994 after a group of concerned Winnipeggers formed a committee to offset a negative stereotype of Aboriginal youth.
