August 5, 2014 - (Phil Hossack / Winnipeg Free Press) VALOUR ROAD VICTORIA CROSS MEDALS HAVE ARRIVED¤ IN WINNIPEG¤¤ Monday, August 4, 2014 ¤ WINNIPEG,Manitoba:¤The original Victoria Cross medals awarded almost 100 years ago to three Winnipeg soldiers who served in the First World War are now in Winnipeg¤and will be¤turned over to The Manitoba Museum by officials of the Canadian War Museum¤at a special ceremony¤this Wednesday, August 6. ¤ The public is¤welcome to attend the Opening Ceremonies for the¤ the Valour Road¤Victoria¤Cross Medal¤display that will get underway at¤1:30 P.M.¤in the Alloway Hall of The¤Manitoba¤Museum. ¤ The Victoria Crosses of Valour Road¤medals were awarded to Lieutenant Robert Shankland, Sergeant-Major Frederick William Hall, and Corporal Leo Clarke in the First World War. In that war, all three, in separate actions, distinguished themselves by their extreme bravery in fighting the enemy. ¤ At the time of their enlistment,¤the three had all resided in the same block of Pine Street in the west end of Winnipeg.¤In honour of the accomplishments of these¤Pine Street¤soldiers, a phenomena that was unique to¤Canada,¤Pine Street¤was renamed¤Valour Road¤in the 1920s.¤ ¤ The Victoria Crosses of Valour Road¤medals will be on public display at The Manitoba Museum until they are returned to their permanent home at the¤Canadian¤War¤Museum¤in¤Ottawa¤at the end of Remembrance Week, the 14th of November 2014. ¤ The project¤to bring The Victoria Crosses of Valour Road Exhibit to Winnipeg is a collaborative effort of The Royal Military Institute of Manitoba (RMIM),The Manitoba Museum and the Canadian War Museum and is¤supported by a grant from the Winnipeg Foundation.¤ ¤ ¤ --30— ¤ NOTE TO EDITORS: Media representatives will be allowed access t
