Photo description:
MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS Paula Grieef the Resident Naturalist at the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre, coordinates all the wildlife surveys, including bird counts as well as the songbird banding program. Blowing on a Swamp Sparrow’s belly, Paula is looking for three pieces of information: fat in the furcular cavity (looking for yellow fat compared to pink muscle), if a brood patch is present (loss of feathers to help with incubation, indicating female) and if a cloacal protruberance is present (cloaca is enlarged to help with mating, indicating male). Paula bands a Swamp Sparrow at the bird banding station at Oak Hammock Marsh Thursday morning. 240718 - Thursday, July 18, 2024.
