biz - Migrant Workers

Photo of Niall Harney - Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, speaks to the media at the press conference.

Migrant Worker Press Conference at the Social Planning Council Winnipeg on Ellice Ave. hosted by Diwa Marcelino, Organizer, Migrante Manitoba.

Several migrant workers speak out today outlining the months of abuse they have endured at the hands of their employer, a large, franchise hotel operating in Northern Manitoba. The workers recently came to Canada through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, a federal program that ties a foreign worker to a single Canadian employer, a system which migrant advocates have dubbed ҭodern slaveryӮ

The workers were excited to start a new chapter of their lives in Canada but say they quickly experienced severe verbal abuse, wage theft and unfair terminations when they started complaining about health and safety conditions at work.
