Councillors on a civic committee bypassed a formal administrative review to rename a downtown park after local Indigenous activist Leslie Spillett. The parks committee unanimously agreed to rename Lizzie Park, located on the south side of Logan Avenue, between Lizzie and Fountain streets, to Spillett’s Ojibway name, Giizhigooweyaabikwe (which means Painted Spirit Woman) Park. But Heritage Winnipeg president Cindy Tugwell said changing the name is disrespectful and Pagtakhan should have found a different way to honour Spillett. - June 8, 2018
