Saskatchewan River, Grand Rapids, MB
Jaylynn Chartier, Phoenix Chartier, Eden Rose Walker
On July 6, 2018, Jaylynn Chartier, age 8, Phoenix Chartier, age 9, and Eden Rose Walker, age 11, were out skipping rocks on the Saskatchewan River in Grand Rapids, MB. They noticed a five year old girl from the community floating face down in the river.
The girls did not hesitate to help out, and while one of them managed to get the smaller child to shore, the others tried to find an adult to assist in the situation. An unidentified adult was found who went to call EMS, while two of the girls performed CPR on the unconscious and non-breathing five year old. The girls had never taken first aid or rescue training, but had learned CPR from watching a movie. The five year old was taken to the community health centre and then further medical attention. She survived and has made a full recovery.
For their quick thinking and bravery in undertaking a rescue despite having no formal training, Jaylynn Chartier, Phoenix Chartier and Eden Rose Walker are deserving of recognition with the Lifesaving Society’s Rescue Commendation.
