49.8 - food security MSP

Documentary photos of people in need lining up early in the morning outside MSP food bank on Main Street Thursday. People start lining up an hour early to be one of the first in line to pick and choose their food, including fresh fruits, breads and meats as well as canned, in a grocery store setting.

The people bring their own bags to fill up with the food items and some bring shopping carts that they tie up outside the store to help them carry their food home.

The shopping cart to the left belongs to Dudley Townsend, one of the regular MSP store customers, who  parked his shopping cart outside the store and tied it with a red ribbon to a tree while waiting in line early in the morning to get his ticket to shop on Thursday.  There are photo of him shopping and leaving the store with grocery items in the cart in merlin.

Documentary photos of Main Street Projec''s weekly food bank that operates like a free grocery store. It’s set up so that people can shop for the food they want, which comes from Winnipeg Harvest. The program peaked last week, serving 170 people, its highest ever numbers. It is the only program of its kind in the city right now.

These photos go along with Katie May's feature on food security running September 21st.
