FAITH - “A Final Frontier? The Uneasy Tension between Science Fiction and Faith.”
 Michael Boyce

Portrait of Michael Boyce incorporated with Science Fiction image on screen in classroom theatre behind him.

Growing up as a geeky church kid, Michael Boyce enjoyed science fiction — things like Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who and Battlestar Galactica.
Boyce, now a professor of English and film studies at Booth University College, never lost his interest in science fiction, or in how it intersects with Christianity.

“Most science fiction isn’t based in faith, but it asks theological questions about our place in the world, where we fit, and the meaning of life and the universe,” he said.

Boyce will explore that subject in an online lecture on January 26, 7 p.m. titled “A Final Frontier? The Uneasy Tension between Science Fiction and Faith.”

Through the lecture he will examine the role science fiction can play in helping Christians explore issues related to faith, comparing the works of science fiction authors Victor Rousseau Emanuel and C.S. Lewis.

“Science fiction raises important questions outside of traditional faith gatherings, things we can learn from,” he added.
