49.8 - Pilgrim Baptist Church

Photo of long-time PBC parishioner Bill Thompson (husband to Valerie Williams), opening the south facing curtains that are especially opened during baptisms to let more light in the tank. The baptismal tank is unique because it allows viewers to see into the tank from church pews. This unique feature is special to Thompson and the congregation.

Description: Photos inside and outside the church and copied photos of exhibit of old photos on walls in the basement.

Historical Info: the Church which was the city's first Black church.

Reverend Dr. Joseph T. Hill was an American preacher who spent a great deal of time in Winnipeg during the 1920s and 1940s. He is also credited with founding the city's first Black church.

Pilgrim Baptist became a cornerstone of Black life in Manitoba. Aside from church services, it was a performing venue for local and visiting Black singers and celebrated American Thanksgiving annually for the large African-American contingent of the local Black community.
