Stand-up - TEC VOC students continue work on SHP beds for the needy.

Francis Cavallero in grade 12 (left), Angel Guillas, grade 11 and Jacob Hardisty in grade 12 (blue), soak and stain headboards of a SHP beds during their carpentry class Tuesday.

Technical Vocational High School students learn how to stain finished headboards and frames of the SHP beds they made in their carpentry class, on Tuesday.

Each frame was dipped and soaked in a large vat of vinegar mixed with steel wool then brushed to allow the stain to soak in and eliminate excess solution. The solution is environmentally friendly, inexpensive and acts as a bed bug repellent.

The students have made 50 frames since November with plans to build up to 150 beds to distribute to under-resourced families across Winnipeg through a partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace Winnipeg, a non-profit organization that builds beds for children and youth.

Tec Voc students will be contributing to the initiative throughout the 2020-2021 school year in various forms such as marketing, fundraising, construction, producing hardware in the metal shop, and installing finished beds. They will also assist with collecting mattresses and bedding donations.
