RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS LOCAL - police hate speech Portrait of former WPS inspector Stan Tataryn, with his retirement police badge and his Winnipeg Police jacket, taken at his home on Wednesday. Former WPS inspector Stan Tataryn has launched a House of Commons petition to add police to those who can be subject to hate speech. He says grassroots groups in Winnipeg are causing a wedge last seen in the 1970s, trying to push police out of the community by vilifying them and making them unable to have the moral authority to de-escalate situations, thus increasing the risk of a gun being pulled. He feels protest signs like "Winnipeg Police are murderers" would not be acceptable if you replace "police" with "gay people." He says the Chauvin trial in Minneapolis has nothing to do with the Eisha Hudson case. Dylan Robertson | Ottawa Bureau Chief April 14, 2021
