Local - Elder Ruth Christie - artifacts

Portrait of Ruth Christie, a First Nations elder who is an honourary UW doctorate, taken in her home with personal artifacts like moose hide moccasins, next to her, Friday.

Christie did not have the metal box (mentioned below), only photos which I copied and put into merlin.

Story about Parks Canada's plan to move artifacts out of Winnipeg to an Ottawa-area clearinghouse. This includes everything from pre-contact First Nations housewares, Métis beading and Mennonite stuff.

Ruth Christie worked for Parks Canada for two decades teaching history at Lower Fort Garry, including her own family's heritage. She had planned to donate artifacts like a metal box the royal family gave an ancestor, but instead loaned it to the Manitoba Museum as Parks Canada couldn't guarantee what would happen with it.
