Originally from Eritrea, Awet (he/him), 44, fell into a life of drinking, gangs and crime before turning his life around 8 or 9 years ago. Now he volunteers his time as a mentor to newcomer youth at IRCOM, giving them the kind of guidance he never received when he arrived in Winnipeg in 1991.
