Winnipeg Free Press Store

BIZ - Dominion News

Guy Paquette owner of Dominion News - 262 Portage Ave.

Dominion News, the oldest surviving store on Portage Avenue -- it would have been 100 years old in 2024 -- is closing at the end of the month. It is the last of its kind. It was a place you could get scores of out-of-town newspapers, every skin magazine title in print, legal smokes and all the paraphernalia you'd need to consume formerly-illegal pot, as well as "viewing booths" in the back for X-rated porn videos. Owner Guy Paquette said despite the fact that its clientele had gotten much older, the store would have been able to last at least until its centenary if COVID had not wiped out the street traffic downtown.
