GREEN PAGE - Thrifting

Story publication date: Saturday, March 19th, 2022

Portrait of Laurie Goetz, Manager of MCC. the catalyst and creative energy behind many of the artistic creations made from donations.

Also photos of volunteers, Len Bergman (left) and Alf Dick, working on projects in the workshop in the back of the store.

Story: Thrifting and the environment for the Green Page. What better way to keep furniture out of the landfill than to donate, purchase, restore, refurbish, recreate or upcycle it. At the MCC furniture thrift store on Keewatin Street there’s a team of volunteer artists, retired engineers and creative spirits anxious to work on the next project. Tractors and bookends are made from broken old sewing machines, lamps made from old tea pots, purses made from old records and so much more. They’ve been able to turn an old $60 dresser into a one of a kind $600 show piece, all while having a whole lot of fun and generating greater dollars for the work of Mennonite Central Committee.
