JOHN WOODS / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS
The Veriasov family, consisting of Kate (centre hugging), Dima (left) and their two young sons Dima 4 and Timothy, 18 months (in arms) and Kate’s mother Laura (background left) are greeted by Mandy (background centre) and Ryan (background right) Kwasnica, their children, Anya 11 (hugging) and Artem 13 (right), and other members of the Charleswood Rotary Club as they arrive at Winnipeg airport Sunday, December 4, 2022. The couple left the Ukraine in March, helping to guide 113 orphaned children from an orphanage in the Ukraine at the direction of the Ukrainian government, to a safe place in Poland due to the war. Upon ensuring the children were safe in Poland, the family applied for refugee status here in Canada. The Charleswood Rotary Club & supporters undertook a plan last April to support the relocation of a Ukrainian War Refugee family to Winnipeg. The Veriasov family have been waiting in Poland since April of this year for the IRCC to process the necessary application papers
