RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Local standup - Honouring Dr. Jean Augustine at event Friday evening. 2023 Black History Month Portrait of Dr. Jean Augustine taken at the Manitoba Legislative Building. Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce to celebrate pillar in the community, Dr. Jean Augustine, at a special event Friday evening at the Manitoba Museum. The Honorable Dr. Jean Augustine made history as the first African Canadian woman elected to Canadaճ Parliament and served from 1993-2006. Her legislative successes include the historic Black History Month Motion; and the ground-breaking Famous Five Motion, which authorized the first and still the only statues on Parliament Hill depicting women other than Queen Elizabeth. Join us on March 3rd in Winnipeg to celebrate this Icon and one of the pillar of our community. The evening will kick off at 5:30pm with cocktails served followed by the premiere of "Steadfast - The Messenger and the Message", a heartwarming documentary film of the life and times of Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine, capturing her humble beginnings in Grenada and her many achievements and laurels after she immigrated to Canada. We hope that our future young leaders will be inspired by Dr. Jeanճ story.
