Boarded up houses at 456 and 458 Elgin Avenue.
For Winnipeggers who live next to a pair of burned-out vacant houses, the demolition of the charred shells can’t come soon enough. They fear it’s only a matter of time before one or both go up in flames again, after WFPS crews were called to at least four fires in a year at one of the homes. “We don’t have problems in the winter, it’s when after the snow melts, it starts,” resident Sarah Cabanting said of the fires. “It is concerning because we are so close.” People had been breaking into the derelict houses, located in the 400 block of Elgin and not far from the city hall. Both were boarded up Thursday.
