RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Standup - Eagle Carving Local wood carver, Bill Nitzsche, shapes his large eagle carving made from an elm tree that was cut down due to Dutch Elm disease, in St, James Cemetery Friday. Nitzsche, a fine-finishing carpenter by trade, has been working on the piece for 5 days and plans on finishing the carving later today. After the wood has a chance to dry he will seal it to protect it from the elements. Nitzsche, a skilled carver who has competed in many local, national and international carving competitions, was commissioned by members of St. James Church and Cemetery to create a work of art from the diseased tree.
