A new motion headed to EPC tomorrow notes “there is a lack of certified arena operators within Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba due to the current certification process and regulations administered by Inspection and Technical Services Manitoba.” Margie Reis, Assistant General Manager of Seven Oaks Sportsplex, said the shortage has been bad for about four years and her rink has at times come within hours of closing before it found staff. She said the exam has a very high failure rate and exceeds what’s actually needed to safely run arenas and avoid the heartbreak of cancelling on kids.
