Canstar Community News LG2012-3170Date: 03 June 2012Location: Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg, MBPhoto By: MCpl Gregory Rutledge, 38 CBG PhotojournalistWinnipeg, MB - The candlelit headstones of Canadian soldiers killed in World War One encircle the Cross of Sacrifice at Brookside Cemetery. To mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Winnipeg's Brookside Cemetery hosted a Candlelight Service of Remembrance in commemoration of the 12,000 Canadian Forces veterans buried in its Military Field of Honour. Youths from the Army and Sea cadet programs placed LED candles on the headstones of each soldier buried in Canada's oldest and largest military internment site, which glowed through the warm summer night in spectacular fashion. The Winnipeg service was inspired by the citizens of The Netherlands, who light candles in memoriam for Canadian soldiers that died liberating their communities during The Second World War. Many local, provincial, federal, and military dignitaries attended the service alongside members of the public and veterans' families.© 2012, DND/MDN, Canada.
