WINNIPEG FREE PRESS FILES July 29, 1968 Construction of Manitoba Hydro's multi-million dollar Nelson River power development project has transformed Gillam into a vital rail transportation centre in northern Manitoba. Canadian National Railways is handling the shipment of thousands of tons of cement from Winnipeg to Gillam to meet the weekly target of 15,000 cubic yards of concrete for the dam and power-house complex. It is taken directly to the site where the concrete is produced. By 1971, when phase one of the project is completed, the CN expects to have moved more than 400,000 tons of equipment and supplies, equal to 80 long freight trains, to the construction site.
