Photo description:
An Amphibex icebreaker uses the excavator arm to pull itself up out of the water and on to the ice, using the weight of the machine to break through the ice. Three Amphibex icebreakers are in use this season, through the end of March, to break up 30 km of ice on the Red River between Netley Lake and Selkirk. The breaking of the ice reduced the chances of ice jams along the river, which reduces the chances of flooding.
