Photo description:
Scott Stephen, an historian at Parks Canada, showcases a few artifacts in the collections at the Parks Canada office in Winnipeg that were recovered from various digs at the forks and area. Railway Spike (21K32G1-2): This spike was recovered from North Point in the railway fill during the 1988 field season. Railway spikes were used to fasten the track to the wooden ties. They were driven parallel to the track and across the tie grain for a stronger hold. This iron spike has an L-shaped head, square shank tapered to a chisel point which indicates it was made by being drawn from a square bar stock. This spikes waxy appearance is attributed to the microcrystalline wax applied to conserve the metal by protecting it from the moisture in the environment. 150924 - Thursday, September 24, 2015 - MIKE DEAL / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS
