Winnipeg Free Press Store
Construction on Market has statues of John Hirsch and Tom Hendry caged in. The life-size bronze, called ‘Imagine, MTC', features John Hirsch standing with arms extended behind Tom Hendry, who is seated in one of two theatre seats, while they discuss their vision for MTC. A plaque adorns the empty seat next to Tom. The sculpture was permanently installed outside of MTC's box office entrance on Friday, October 24. It was generously supported by Babs and Gail Asper and Michael Paterson, and the Johnston Group in honour of Marjorie Johnston, former MTC Board President. The theatre was founded in 1958 by John Hirsch and Tom Hendry as an amalgamation of the Winnipeg Little Theatre and Theatre 77. In 2010, the theatre was honoured to receive royal designation from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and officially became the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.
