Photo description:
RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Genevieve Matkowska, 87yrs, who as a young Polish girl survived being a deportee to Siberia than moved to many other countries during the 2nd Worls war, stands next to a new art exhibit that opens Friday at Ogniwo Polish Museum of Polish kids art, some hers, from the gulag in Siberia. The artwork they drew was depictions of what surrounded them like barracks, workers and the places they were sent with their families as refugees Middle East, Iran, Africa, New Zealand and Mexico. Their story has been buried and forgotten for generations. Nowadays youll see their obits that say they travelled extensively as a child -- they werent tourists they were uprooted by Stalin and shunted around the world like many Syrian and African refugees are today.
