WAYNE GLOWACKI / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS In the forground from right, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Cathy Cox, Ron Schuler, MLA, Sonia Kushliak and Monsignor Michael Buyochok by The Bitter Memories Of Childhood monument on the Manitoba Legislative grounds for a ceremony Thursday to remember the Ukrainian famine genocide of 1932 to 1933. Sonia of Winnipeg is a Holodomor survivor who was eight years old in the Ukraine when the famine began. During the Soviet governments regime, millions of Ukrainians starved to death during the Holodomor, which translates into death by hunger. Manitoba is among jurisdictions around the world that formally commemorate the Holodomor annually on the fourth Saturday of November, known in Manitoba as Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day. This year it takes place on Nov. 25. During Thursdays question period Minister Cathy Cox introduced a moment of silence and stalks of wheat, tied with a black ribbon were placed on the desk of every member of the legislative assembly.
