RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS 49.8 - Vintage Hockey Stick Photos of hockey stick, circa 1900. Bill Wsiaki is writing a feature piece on the original owner of the hockey stick W. M. Hart who, among other feats, was awarded the Military Cross in WWI. Photos taken at the College. More info: Photos for a freelance piece by Bill Wsiaki who is responsible for the College archive which contains documents, memorabilia and other artefacts important to the College. One such item is a hockey stick, circa 1900, which was found in the office of the late Fr. Vince Jensen, SJ, who taught Canadian history at St. Pauls College and the University of Manitoba between 1948 until 1970 when he passed away. The story traces the hockey stick to its original owner. He was a graduate of the Manitoba Medical College at the UM in 1907. The story is really more about an individual who became a medical doctor, a pioneer in the fight against tuberculosis, awarded the Military Cross in WWI, he survived being a POW behind enemy lines, only to return to Canada and die of appendicitis.
