RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS LOCAL STDUP - Kendra's walk St. Johns-Ravenscourt School students, teacher's, parents and dogs take part in the 10th anniversary of Kendras at around the grounds of their school on 400 South Drive, Friday. All funds raised support CancerCare Manitobas research for teens living with cancer. This year, funds raised will be directed towards PROFYLE (Terry Fox PRecision Oncology For Young PeopLE), a new project for CancerCare Manitoba Foundation which aims to give children, adolescents and young adults who are out of convential treatment options another chance to beat their cancer. More info: At the age of 15, St. Johns-Ravenscourt student, Kendra McBain, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer, alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Kendra spent countless hours of her teen years undergoing treatment in the childrens section of CancerCare Manitoba. Kendra decided to raise money to create a special place just for teens at CancerCare Manitobaa welcoming sanctuary for those young people who were no longer children, but were also not yet adults. The inaugural walk took place on May 29, 2009. Kendras courage, her determination and her sunny smile won the hearts and support of thousands of people in the community. The 1st walk event raised more than $160,000 for CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. Kendras efforts not only provided a cozy room designed specifically for teens with cancer, but also significant funds for CancerCare Manitobas Teens Living with Cancer (TLC) support program, and further research into rhabdomyosarcoma.
