Winnipeg Free Press photojournalist Ruth Bonneville collects donations at Windsor School for a charity she is supporting through her church. Some of the students that are taking part the 2017 project overheard Ruth talking about her trip to Africa and spontaneously decided to start a collection. Thirteen year old Mackenzie, a grade 8 student at Windsor School took it upon herself to rally up her fellow students in her K - 8 school to donate baby items for a orphanage in Uganda. After hearing that Free Press staff photographer Ruth Bonneville was heading to Watoto, a baby orphanage in Gulu Africa she asked if she could help by collecting needed items for the kids. Mackenzie has been active in "We Day" activities which encourage students all over Manitoba to find ways to give back to others. She put together a letter for the students to take home and made presentations to her fellow students on the needs of the baby's in the orphanage In just a few weeks over 12 boxes were collected, everything from diapers to toys and books. The items were loaded up Tuesday afternoon to be packed in large duffle bags and sent with the group of volunteers with her church when they leave for Uganda on Saturday,Feb 16.
