MIKE DEAL / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Romeo Ignacio (right), president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505, and Vice President James Van Gerwen (left) talk about driver safety after the press conference. Winnipeg City councillor, Matt Allard, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure, Renewal and Public Works and Greg Ewankiw, Director of Winnipeg Transit unveil the new emergency signals on transit buses at a Winnipeg Transit garage, 421 Osborne Street, Thursday afternoon. Transit drivers have long complained that theres a lack of security on buses, with frequent assaults against drivers, and have welcomed this move. Winnipeg Transits new emergency signal system will be fully operational on all Winnipeg Transit buses by December 15, 2021. The new system will allow operators to alert members of the public outside the bus and the Transit Control Centre at the same time, that emergency responders are needed. When operators enable the signal, exterior bus signs will read Emergency Call 911 and Do Not Board Bus. 211209 - Thursday, December 09, 2021.
