June 24, 2013 - (Phil Hossack / Winnipeg Free Press)  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ¤ La Liberté is celebrating its 100th anniversary by immortalizing the work done by the weekly newspaper La Liberté and Manitoba’s francophone community over the past hundred years ¤ ST. BONIFACE, June 24, 2013 - ¤ June 24th was the inauguration of La Liberté Trail and the monument commemorating the work done by the weekly newspaper La Liberté and Manitoba’s francophone community over the last 100 years. ¤ “La Liberté Trail and Monument immortalize the work done by the weekly newspaper La Liberté and Manitoba’s francophone community over the past 100 years,” said La Liberté’s executive director and editor-in-chief, Sophie Gaulin. “This physical presence will act as a lasting reminder of La Liberté’s importance today, tomorrow, and in the future.” ¤ “The mandate of Rivers West is to develop and promote the cultural, historic and recreational values of the communities along the Red River Corridor,” said Rivers West executive director, Julie Turenne-Maynard. “Thanks to a subsidy from Canadian Heritage, we are delighted to support La Liberté’s 100th anniversary celebrations and to be involved in the two legacy projects: La Liberté Trail and the Commemorative Monument.” ¤ “Like this monument here on the corner of Taché Avenue and Provencher Boulevard, our newspaper La Liberté has over the past 100 years become the cornerstone of our community,” said Dan Vandal, city councillor for St. Boniface.¤ “These celebrations, the monument and the trail all make it possible for us now to immortalize its importance and to thank its numerous collaborators for helping to preserve our heritage, our culture and our history as a thriving francophone community.” ¤ Sentier La Liberté Trail begins at the Norwood Bridge and ends at Whittier Park.
