MIKE DEAL / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS The WFPS has served Karin Harper-Penner, owner of the Adanac Apartments at 737 Sargent Ave. with an order to vacate, following an Aug. 16 inspection. “At the time of inspection, the building had no power to most suites and extensive fire code violations, including missing and non-functioning life safety equipment,” the order said. The building has around 38 registered tenants, all of which must be out of their suites by 2 p.m. Monday. Harper-Penner is angry. She took us inside the building to speak with tenants, who don’t know where they are going to live. Coun. Cindy Gilroy said the safety hazards at the building supersede housing concerns. Marion Willis at Street Links disagreed, saying closing the building will create “a whole new level of crisis.” “There will be an exodus from the Adanac to the river banks and bridges, where (former tenants) will build new encampments,” she said. “We constantly find ourselves starting over.” See Tyler Searle story 230818 - Friday, August 18, 2023.
