14092023 Students from Hamiota Elementary School explore a parked grain truck while learning about harvest during the third annual Acres for Hamiota harvest west of Hamiota on warm Thursday. Acres for Hamiota raises money for community projects and organizations. This year 80 acres of wheat were seeded for the initiative and volunteers helped throughout the growing season from seeding to harvest. Donations from community members and local agriculture, seed and chemical companies helped cover the costs of growing the crop. Some of the profits from the initiative have gone towards the local golf course, the minor ball park, AED machines throughout the community and to the Hamiota Fire Department. Overnight rain meant harvesting the wheat had to be postponed but community members and students still came together for a BBQ lunch. (Tim Smith/The Brandon Sun)
