There are no bellowing out "Hurry hard!" when a small group of youngsters venture out on to their three sheets for a weekend learn to curl lesson at the Brandon Curling Club. Instead, the helmet-wearing neophyte curlers — some participants actually use bicycle helmets instead which is OK — attentively listen to their coaches Shaelynn Forster and Osten Sahulkia. There's the occasional giggle or words of encouragement from each other, but mainly its about building curling skills using the brooms and sliders provided. These kids are potentially future club members, and under the tutelage of the two Brandon University students, they soak up every word or example shown during the session. Talyn, who dons a hockey helmet which includes the facial protection, is especially attentive to what Sahulka demonstrates, then tries to mirror the release from the hack after a more upright slide. This process is repeated, as each young curler tries their best impersonation of Jennifer Jones or Reid Carruthers. This co-ed activity often coincides with adults curling on adjacent sheets, so the kids are not shy about peeking across to see how a game is played. The Brandon Curling Club is hosting Curling Day in Canada on Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. if parents want to join their kids to hone their skills, but also take part in doubles curling and two-person stick curling. For more information on learn to curl for kids contact club manager Garth Forster at 204-726-3560. (Photos by Jules Xavier/The Brandon Sun)
