Ruth Bonneville / Free Press biz - Migrant Workers Group photo of Diwa Marcelino, migrant rights activist Manitoba (centre blue shirt) with migrant workers, Jmillson Santos (right), John Maravilla (left, green shirt) and two others who wished to remain anonymous in rear, at press conference where the workers speak out about abuse they have endured at the hands of their employer, Monday. The Migrant Worker Press Conference was held at the Social Planning Council Winnipeg on Ellice Ave. hosted by Diwa Marcelino, Organizer, Migrante Manitoba. Several migrant workers speak out today outlining the months of abuse they have endured at the hands of their employer, a large, franchise hotel operating in Northern Manitoba. The workers recently came to Canada through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, a federal program that ties a foreign worker to a single Canadian employer, a system which migrant advocates have dubbed “modern slavery”. The workers were excited to start a new chapter of their lives in Canada but say they quickly experienced severe verbal abuse, wage theft and unfair terminations when they started complaining about health and safety conditions at work.
