LOCAL - veterans centre

Photo of Dave Mclaughlin, a Royal Canadian Navy veteran, as he works to set up the new centre Wednesday.

NEW VETERANS CENTRE: A new veterans centre will open its doors on July 1 to create a "safe haven" for veterans with PTSD or mental health struggles. Dave Mclaughlin, a Royal Canadian Navy veteran, decided in November he needed to set up a space that doesn't revolve around alcohol like the legions scattered around the city, but focuses on community and mental health help instead. The new centre will hire two trained support workers and will host social events, support group meetings, and offer help with veterans filling out paperwork for Veterans Affairs claims.
