MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS
Once the barriers and signage was taken down, huge numbers of pedestrians took the opportunity to cross Main Street.
The day of the official opening of the pedestrian crosswalks at the historic intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street started with crews clearing away the last of the barriers and impatient people crossing despite those barriers.
The Mayor, Scott Gillingham and several city council members, along with may of the stakeholders for the buildings at each of the corners of the intersection were on hand with several hundred members of the public who cam to cheer and be some of the first to cross after the opening.
Dancing Gabe was on hand to lead a huge crowd around each of the intersections.
