MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS Once crossing the street at Portage and Main became official huge crowds of people make their way around to each of the crosswalks. The day of the official opening of the pedestrian crosswalks at the historic intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street started with crews clearing away the last of the barriers and impatient people crossing despite those barriers. The Mayor, Scott Gillingham and several city council members, along with may of the stakeholders for the buildings at each of the corners of the intersection were on hand with several hundred members of the public who cam to cheer and be some of the first to cross after the opening.
