Ruth Bonneville Free Press Local Grant’s Old Mill Photo of Grant’s Old Mill, for a story on plans to dismantle and rebuild the structure at an estimated cost of $600,000, with funds to be raised. The current mill pictured here was built in 1975 as a reconstruction of an 1820s water mill. Grant’s Old Mill is a historic site on Sturgeon Creek in Winnipeg’s St. James area, where a grain mill operated between 1829 and about 1832 under Métis leader Cuthbert James Grant. Recognized as the first water mill in Western Canada, a working recreation of the mill building was erected at the site in 1974 as part of Winnipeg’s centennial celebrations. April 27th, 2026
