DAYCARE GRANT: A Winnipeg child-care provider is questioning why it hasn’t been given an operating grant by the province to open a North End daycare despite completing the licencing requirements to obtain one. Lily Bartlett, a supervisor at Splash Child Care, said the non-profit organization has been told it must operate the site without the grant. “An operating grant creates the subsidies needed to run a non-profit daycare,” Bartlett wrote to the Free Press. She said the grant pays educators’ wages, educational materials, and maintenance costs while subsidizing a majority of a family’s child-care fees, allowing families to only pay $10 a day per child. She accused the province of “stonewalling” the organization.
