Ruth Bonneville / Free Press Local Standup - Sleeping Porters memorial The Order of Sleeping Car Porters Memorial Garden was unveiled on Friday at 799 Main Street in Winnipeg. The ceremony brought together descendants, families, and diverse community leaders to honour a legacy that began when Black railway workers organized North America's first Black union here in 1917. This permanent garden serves as a lasting tribute to the porters, their families, and the courageous labour leaders whose advocacy advanced labour rights, racial equality, and human dignity across Canada.
