Drummers set the beat to sing in "Light Up the Avenue" For Immediate Release 10th Annual Lighting Up The Avenue Aboriginal Vision for the North End and the North End Community Helpers Network (NECHN) are pleased to announce the 10th annual Lighting up the Avenue. The Lighting up the Avenue (LUTA) community celebration is our time to report back to the community, celebrate the spirit of the season, and give Selkirk Avenue a more festive look and feel. “Life in the North End, the heart of Winnipeg, will get a little brighter on Dec. 5 as we join together to celebrate our 10th Annual Lighting up the Avenue. This wonderful coming together of friends, family, and community partners oozes with the spirit of the holiday season,” says Kristi Havens, NECHN chair. This event is a community development project that results in a united and cohesive neighbourhood through a joint effort to revitalize Selkirk Avenue for the holidays. The event features a community feast, a lighting up ceremony of Powers Park Park, entertainment, raffle prizes, Children and Elder’s gifts, and a visit from Santa. Relationships are formed between children, youth, adults, and Elders during the event as everyone comes together through volunteer opportunities and celebration. Lighting up the Avenue is a vital event in improving the quality of life in this community and presenting a positive and cohesive North End community to the rest of Winnipeg.
