PINK PUMPKINS as well as orange AT ST. VITAL CENTRE RAISE CASH FOR CANCERCARE: Organizer hopes to surpass last yearÄôs $6,500 donation .Stan Soltes, the man behind last yearÄôs pink pumpkin sale, is back with a fresh crop .Soltes and St. Vital Centre are teaming up once more to sell pumpkins in support of breast cancer. From October 2 to 5, Soltes will set up in the parking lot near Old Navy to sell his pumpkins, along with a selection of squash and sugar pie pumpkins. Due to a late spring and poor growing season, pink pumpkins are limited this year, but Soltes has a colourful selection of orange, green, and blonde pumpkins available. Soltes, 76, has a very personal connection to the project, as his daughter, Debbie McDonald, was diagnosed with lymphoma of the brain June 2013. Proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins will go to CancerCare Manitoba, and directed to breast cancer research and care. October is also breast cancer awareness month. Last year, Soltes sold out within four days and raised over $6,500 for CancerCare Manitoba. This year, Soltes and St. Vital Centre hope to see even more people turn up to purchase pumpkins in support of a charitable cause. Oct. 2 2014 / KEN GIGLIOTTI / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS
