The three-year-old program recently performed the 100th surgery to insert a cochlear hearing device. A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that can help to provide a sense of sound by electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. Adults who have lost all or most of their hearing later in life can benefit from cochlear implants by associating the sounds made through an implant with sounds they remember. Cochlear implants, together with intensive post-implant auditory-verbal therapy, help young children learn to use their device to develop speech .
