The principal actor in the drama is Frank Stronach, the Austro-Canadian horseman and mega-magnate who sent Red Bullet out to win the Preakness in Baltimore ten years ago and whose corporate banner flaps beside the Stars and Stripes at the gates of Laurel Park. Mr. Stronach has stated his desire to salvage a full program of thoroughbred action from the current confusion â thereby saving an estimated ten thousand racetrack, backstretch and ancillary jobs â but no contract has been signed.
